Wastewaters

Wastewaters

Water used in households, industries and businesses is mostly transferred through the sewerage system to a sewage treatment plant.

At the sewage treatment plant wastewaters are cleaned first mechanically and the biggest solids are removed. Then water flows into activated sludge tanks, where suspended solids are removed with the help of oxygen and microorganisms. Finally mineral substances are removed in secondary sedimentation tanks. Only such treated water is then released back to the nature.

Public sewerage networks and sewage treatment plants do not have long history. Their construction mostly started in the second half of the 20th century. The number of customers connected to sewerage system with a sewage treatment plant at the end has been growing constantly. In the area operated by Vodakva it is now about 93% of the population.

In total Vodakva operates nowadays 71 sewage treatment plants. The biggest of them are in cities of Karlovy Vary, Tachov, Ostrov, Jáchymov, Chodov, Stříbro, Vejprty, Toužim and Žlutice.

Sewage Treatment Plant Karlovy Vary-Drahovice:

The Sewage Treatment Plant Karlovy Vary-Drahovice is the biggest wastewater treatment plant in the area operated by Vodakva. It was built between 1961 and 1967 and has been extended and modernized several times since then. The plant uses mechanical/ biological treatment process containing nitrogen and phosphor removal. The treatment capacity was designed for 80 000 population equivalent (the calculation is based on the pollution produced per inhabitant). Nowadays, besides the city of Karlovy Vary, other seventeen surrounding municipalities are connected to this plant. It means about 60 000 inhabitants connected and a number of other wastewater producers e.g. hotels, restaurants, industry etc.  The average daily flow of this plant is about 24 000 m3of wastewater which is treated and discharged into the OhřeRiver. The whole treatment process today is fully automated and computer controlled.
